Hot weather can be dangerous and can cause serious illness. Stay safe and look out for others who may be particularly vulnerable to the heat. Read advice on GOV.UK

Volunteering in an emergency

The emergency services may become extremely stretched during an emergency and it may be necessary for voluntary agencies to assist with the response or recovery.

In the same way the voluntary sector can be a real help during an emergency, communities can also be a useful asset to government and emergency service responders.

There are a number of groups that you can sign up to if you wish to volunteer your help, these are just a few examples:

  • British Red Cross – are looking for all types of volunteers, from helping in emergencies to providing first aid at events and much more.
  • Muslim Aid – you can volunteer to help in a number of ways, from helping out in the office to providing support in the event of an emergency.
  • Neighbourhood Watch – works to bring neighbours together to create strong, friendly, active communities. You can join a group in your area or start your own.
  • St Johns Ambulance – are looking for volunteers to assist with first aid and saving lives. Additionally, there are opportunities to volunteer as a member of support staff.
  • Salvation Army – are always looking for all sorts of volunteers to work with vulnerable members of the community, as well as helping in major emergencies.
  • Octopus Communities – this Islington based charity aims to develop community centres in the borough into hubs for the community. Take a look at their current projects to see how you can get involved in a variety of different ways.
  • Voluntary Action Islington – offers a wide range of services, including support for voluntary groups and finding volunteering opportunities in Islington.

Starting a community group can be a great way to get involved. If there isn’t already an established group in your area to join, consider talking to other interested people in your community and working together to help your community prepare for, respond to and recover from emergencies.

If you would like any advice or support with starting a community resilience group, contact the Emergency Planning team: emergencyplanning@islington.gov.uk or telephone 020 7527 2000.
