Stay safe in very hot weather

Very hot weather is expected for the next few days. A red heat-health alert (the highest level) is in place for London on Wednesday and Thursday.  

Hot weather can be dangerous and can cause serious illness. Stay safe and look out for others who may be particularly vulnerable to the heat. Read advice on GOV.UK

Cool spaces

There are local cool spaces that are free and open to everyone. Visit them to rest, drink water and stay cool. Find a cool space near you

Access Islington hubs 

North and South Access Islington hubs are closed due to the hot weather. The Central Hub is open for urgent, in-person support, until 4pm today (Wednesday 24 June) but avoid travelling unless it is essential. 

You can still access our services online and you can call us on 020 7527 2000 if you need to speak to someone.

Discretionary Rate Relief for charities and non-profit-organisations

Charities in receipt of mandatory charity relief and non-profit-making organisations can apply for a discretionary discount on their rates.

Discretionary Rate Relief 2023-2026

The council's Discretionary Rate Relief (DRR) programme is now closed to applicants. Those in receipt of Discretionary Rate Relief currently under the 2023-2026 will have their relief until 31 March 2026 and will need to reapply under the new scheme.

Discretionary Rate Relief Scheme 2026-2029

Islington Council’s Discretionary Rate Relief Scheme for 2026 – 2029 is now open. The scheme offers relief set out below for a maximum of 3 years from date of application to March 2029.

The scheme is made up of seven rounds and decisions will be made at the end of each round and applicants notified within a month of the closing date. Awards will be backdated to the date of application. 

Round 1              1 Feb 2026-31 March 2026
Round 2             1 April 2026 – 30 Sept 2026
Round 3             1 Oct 2027 – 31 March 2027
Round 4             1 April 2027 – 30 Sept 2027
Round 5             1 Oct 2027 – 31 March 2027
Round 6             1 April 2028 – 30 Sept 2028
Round 7             1 October 2028 – 31 March 2029

Please note our Discretionary Rate Relief scheme will close early if all relief is allocated out so we encourage organisations to apply early to avoid disappointment. 

Discretionary Rate Relief is available as follows

  • up to 20% relief can be awarded to registered charities and registered sports clubs that qualify for mandatory rate relief
  • up to 100% relief can be awarded to organisations that do not qualify for mandatory rate relief, but who meet the eligibility criteria

Islington-based voluntary and community sector organisations seeking support with their business rates are still entitled to receive mandatory rate relief of 80% off their business rates.
