Stay safe in very hot weather

Very hot weather is expected for the next few days. A red heat-health alert (the highest level) is in place for London on Wednesday and Thursday.  

Hot weather can be dangerous and can cause serious illness. Stay safe and look out for others who may be particularly vulnerable to the heat. Read advice on GOV.UK

Cool spaces

There are local cool spaces that are free and open to everyone. Visit them to rest, drink water and stay cool. Find a cool space near you

Access Islington hubs 

North and South Access Islington hubs are closed due to the hot weather. The Central Hub is open for urgent, in-person support, until 4pm today (Wednesday 24 June) but avoid travelling unless it is essential. 

You can still access our services online and you can call us on 020 7527 2000 if you need to speak to someone.

Temporary structures

Apply for short or long-life structures, or ‘untypical’ independent structures such as marquees, free-standing walls and chimneys, and grandstands.

You can apply for short or long-life structures, or 'untypical' independent structures, under Section 30 of The London Building Acts (Amendment) Act, 1939 as amended by The Building (Inner London) Regularisations 1985.

This includes structures such as:

  • marquees for public events
  • free-standing wind turbines
  • free-standing walls or fences exceeding six feet in height
  • free-standing chimneys and masts
  • lighting towers
  • elevated un-roofed grandstands at sports grounds

Fees

You do not pay VAT on any fees.

    Section 30 structures

    • New applications: £413
    • Additional hourly rate: £135
    • Admin charge for changing the duration of your temporary structure only: £135 

    Inflatable structures

    • Inflatable structures over 12 feet by 12 feet: £300
    • Additional hourly rate: £135 

    How to pay the fees 

    You must pay the fees when you apply. To pay, email: building.control@islington.gov.uk.

    How to apply 

    Apply using the online form. You can use this form for building notice, full plans or regularisation applications. 

    We will ask you to give supporting documents. Please provide a location plan which shows where the temporary structure will be situated and its proximity to the highway. 

    Please also provide information about: 

    • Location of emergency exits from temporary structure.
    • How the temporary structure will be supported adequately or foundations.
    • Material that the temporary structure is constructed of and confirmation from the installer that the structure is in accordance with the manufacturer’s installation guidance.
    • Arrangements for early warning of fire and internal wall or ceiling surface lining.
    • The escape route away from the temporary structure, in the event of an emergency, to a place of safety. The route should be level uniform, non-slip and adequate in width, subject to the numbers in temporary structure occupation.
    • Artificial and emergency lighting for the temporary structure and routes away from as appropriate.
    • Ventilation for the occupants in the temporary structure. 
    • Foul and waste water arrangements including drainage where sinks, dishwashers, toilets and similar are included within the temporary structure.
    • Washing and toilet facilities where provided.
    • Reasonable access arrangements for persons with a disability, access statement.
    • Stairs or steps into the temporary structure will require guarding/handrail and tread and riser design and ramp.
    • The dates when the temporary structure will be in place and removed
