Hot weather can be dangerous and can cause serious illness. Stay safe and look out for others who may be particularly vulnerable to the heat. Read advice on GOV.UK

Access Islington hubs

North and South Access Islington hubs are closed due to the hot weather. The Central Hub is open for urgent, in-person support, until 4pm today (Wednesday 24 June) but avoid travelling unless it is essential.

Composting at home

Composting and wormeries are cheap and easy ways to turn your garden and food waste into nutrients for your garden.

Composting at home

Compost is a rich, dark soil-like material you can produce by mixing together natural produce such as unwanted garden material and organic kitchen waste. It acts as a natural fertiliser and is full of nutrients to use on your garden.

Here's how to start home composting.

Community composting

If you don’t have your own garden, there may be a food growing area on your estate. If you want to set up community composting on your estate, contact recycling@islington.gov.uk.

If you have garden waste, consider subscribing to the garden waste recycling service.

Wormeries

Wormeries are a great way of composting cooked and uncooked food waste. A wormery is your own worm farm in a bin. The worms live amongst the food waste, converting it into rich dark compost and a liquid plant feed.

Learn how to set up and maintain your own wormery.

The council offers a subsidy for compost bins and wormeries. Visit Get Composting website for more information

Food waste recycling

If you don’t want to compost your food waste or set up a wormery, you can still play a big part in reducing the impact of your leftover food by recycling your food waste.
