Stay safe in very hot weather

Very hot weather is expected for the next few days. A red heat-health alert (the highest level) is in place for London on Wednesday and Thursday.  

Hot weather can be dangerous and can cause serious illness. Stay safe and look out for others who may be particularly vulnerable to the heat. Read advice on GOV.UK

Cool spaces

There are local cool spaces that are free and open to everyone. Visit them to rest, drink water and stay cool. Find a cool space near you

Access Islington hubs 

North and South Access Islington hubs are closed due to the hot weather. The Central Hub is open for urgent, in-person support, until 4pm today (Wednesday 24 June) but avoid travelling unless it is essential. 

You can still access our services online and you can call us on 020 7527 2000 if you need to speak to someone.

Temporary vehicle crossovers

You need a licence to install a temporary crossover on a public highway. The aim of licensing is to balance the needs of businesses and residents with the public expectation of an unobstructed footway.

How to apply

You must apply at least 10 working days in advance to give us enough time to process the licence and ensure the co-ordination of works. Make sure you include the correct documentation or we cannot process the licence.

To apply, complete the temporary vehicle crossover licence online form. You must provide:

  • the exact location of where the crossover is to be placed
  • the exact site address if different from crossover location
  • a complete description and extent of works carried out on site
  • the estimated dates that you require the licence
  • a plan
  • confirmation that you hold a public liability insurance policy for the sum of £10 million or above.
  • a traffic management plan
  • a pedestrian management plan
  • copies of New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 (NRSWA) accreditation (one operative and one supervisor)
  • an emergency contact number (available 24 hours a day)

If you require that a crossover becomes permanent you will need to apply to the highways maintenance team at 1 Cottage Road, London N7 8TP.

Deposits and fees

No payment is required with your application. If we approve your application, instructions of to pay online will be emailed to you.

Deposits are held until the completion of works. They will then be transferred to a rechargeable works account. The deposit will then contribute towards the final costs of the reinstatement. No reinstatements or reconstruction must be carried out by the applicant.

Any inspection carried out following a valid complaint however received will be subject to a non-compliance fee.

Parking

If you require parking to be suspended, contact the parking team to request this: parkingsuspensions@islington.gov.uk. A separate application and payment will be required for parking suspensions. It is an offence to place an obstruction in a parking bay, which has not been suspended the council has the power to remove the obstruction and prosecute the person responsible.
