Stay safe in very hot weather

Very hot weather is expected for the next few days. A red heat-health alert (the highest level) is in place for London on Wednesday and Thursday.

Hot weather can be dangerous and can cause serious illness. Stay safe and look out for others who may be particularly vulnerable to the heat. Read advice on GOV.UK

People-friendly streets in Canonbury West

Why we've introduced a low traffic neighbourhood in Canonbury West, where it operates, and how it is performing.

In November 2020, as part of our people-friendly streets (PFS) programme, we introduced a low traffic neighbourhood trial in Canonbury West.

Like many neighbourhoods within the borough, Canonbury West has suffered from increased traffic volumes in recent years from the use of the area as a short-cut.

The trial aimed to:

  • Make it easier and safer to walk and cycle
  • Clean up the air we breathe
  • Reduce road danger

We introduced the following traffic filters: Canonbury Place, Alwyne Road, Clephane Road and Ramsey Walk. All traffic filters are enforced by cameras.

You can see locations of the traffic filters on Google maps or view the map of the Canonbury West low traffic neighbourhood (PDF) at the bottom of the page. A downloadable version of the map is available in the 'Useful documents' section of this page.

Blue Badge exemptions

In March 2022, we announced that we would be continuing the Canonbury West PFS neighbourhood and made an important change to allow Blue Badge holders to travel within the neighbourhood.

New signage was installed at Canonbury Place, Alwyne Road, Clephane Road and Ramsey Walk.

We have decided to continue the Canonbury West PFS neighbourhood with the Blue Badge holder's exemption on a permanent basis from 24 February 2023.

Since March 2022, we have continued to monitor the Canonbury West PFS neighbourhood. The final monitoring results compared data collected in October 2021 with data collected in October 2022 to monitor the scheme after we exempted eligible Blue Badge holders.

The results demonstrate that the Canonbury West PFS neighbourhood is continuing to have positive impacts.

The future of Canonbury West

We will continue to work to improve the local environment in Canonbury West, including:

  • People-friendly pavements: we will make improvements to footpaths to ensure they are accessible for walking, wheeling and using buggies and wheelchairs.
  • Greening: we will work with local people to implement more greening.
  • Safety: we will continue to monitor local roads and explore options for further speed reduction measures, and improving conditions for people walking and cycling.
