Stay safe in very hot weather

Very hot weather is expected for the next few days. A red heat-health alert (the highest level) is in place for London on Wednesday and Thursday.

Hot weather can be dangerous and can cause serious illness. Stay safe and look out for others who may be particularly vulnerable to the heat. Read advice on GOV.UK

Cool spaces

There are local cool spaces that are free and open to everyone. Visit them to rest, drink water and stay cool. Find a cool space near you

Access Islington hubs

North and South Access Islington hubs are closed due to the hot weather. The Central Hub is open for urgent, in-person support, until 4pm today (Wednesday 24 June) but avoid travelling unless it is essential.

You can still access our services online and you can call us on 020 7527 2000 if you need to speak to someone.

Bunhill, Barbican and Golden Lane Healthy Neighbourhood

Islington Council and the City of London Corporation are working in partnership on the long-term future of the Bunhill, Barbican and Golden Lane area.

We are proposing to create a cross-boundary healthy neighbourhood in Bunhill, south of Old Street, as part of our efforts to create a cleaner, greener, and healthier borough.

This healthy neighbourhood plan aims to create pleasant and lively streets where communities can come together to spend time with their neighbours, support local shops, and children can play and travel safely. With more plants and trees, seating for neighbours and reduced traffic, the healthy neighbourhood will transform Bunhill’s streets.

After listening to local people’s feedback, we are prioritising:

  • creating safe streets for children to travel to school and areas for play
  • reducing through-traffic, improving road safety and air quality
  • supporting local businesses to thrive.

The liveable neighbourhood will also work to:

  • create greener and more pleasant streets
  • make it easier and safer to walk and cycle
  • bring the community together.

To review the work that has been undertaken so far, please see the timeline.

Timeline

We have now completed the first phase of the project, which included listening to people's views and ideas on how we should improve streets and public spaces within the project area.

Since then, we have been working closely with the City of London to create a cross-boundary healthy neighbourhood and we are now at a stage to undertake engagement on initial proposals.

Based on the feedback during this phase of engagement, we will finalise proposals for the cross-boundary healthy neighbourhood project. In 2025, we will publish our final designs which will then be subject to a formal consultation with local people.

Head to the engagement page to find out more information, and to see the initial proposals we are seeking feedback on.

How to get involved

We want to work with local people to understand local issues that you would like to see addressed in the Bunhill, Barbican and Golden Lane to create healthier and more pleasant streets, and work together to design and implement the cross-boundary healthy neighbourhood. Visit the engagement page.

See our proposals, sign up to events, and give us your views about improving local streets and public spaces. Get involved.

Planning the healthy neighbourhood

We want to work with local people to understand the issues you would like to see addressed in the Bunhill area to create healthier and more pleasant streets, working together to design and implement the cross-boundary healthy neighbourhood.

To do this, we will be holding several different types of engagement activities to hear from the whole community as we develop designs. Details of events and opportunities to get involved will be advertised on the engagement page. We will also publicise them locally.
