Stay safe in very hot weather

Very hot weather is expected for the next few days. A red heat-health alert (the highest level) is in place for London on Wednesday and Thursday.  

Hot weather can be dangerous and can cause serious illness. Stay safe and look out for others who may be particularly vulnerable to the heat. Read advice on GOV.UK

Cool spaces

There are local cool spaces that are free and open to everyone. Visit them to rest, drink water and stay cool. Find a cool space near you

Access Islington hubs 

North and South Access Islington hubs are closed due to the hot weather. The Central Hub is open for urgent, in-person support, until 4pm today (Wednesday 24 June) but avoid travelling unless it is essential.

Travel for children

All children under the age of 5 can travel for free with a fare-paying adult on Transport for London (TfL) services and National Rail train services. That includes London busses, trams, the tube, DLR, overground and nationwide rail services.

Children of compulsory school age (5 to 16) get free travel on TfL bus routes with a Zip Oyster photocard.

Children aged 16 to 17 can apply online for a 16+ Zip Oyster photocard, which will give them 50 per cent off adult fares.

Railcards

Railcards can save you money on train tickets. There are a number of railcards to choose from, depending on things like your age, who you are travelling with and any disabilities you may have.

Railcards can be purchased online or in person at a staffed railway station. They are available to non-UK nationals and you will need a form of ID to purchase one. For a full list of available railcards, or to search for one most suitable for you or your family, visit the railcard website.

Planning journeys in London

London has a big and convenient public transport system. There are many resources that can help you to plan your journey around the city.

  • Transport for London's (TfL) website has an easy-to-use website which can help you to plan your journey. You can also download bus and tube maps.
  • Google Maps and City Mapper can help you plan public transport, taxi and driving routes, including the cost of your trip.

Travelling outside the UK

You can travel outside the UK after arriving but we recommend you register for your eVisa first.

Driving in the UK

If you passed your driving test in Ukraine and have a valid driving licence, you can drive all the vehicles shown on your driving licence for up to 3 years from when you become a resident in the UK (or until the licence expires if it is valid for less than 3 years).

If you want to drive for over 3 years, you will need to exchange your driving licence for a UK driving licence.
